With his new jersey number, rookie wide receiver Jamees Winston is already the most decorated rookie since Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
But the 21-year-old also has a long history of making bold, provocative art, from the iconic murals in his native Charlotte to his new “easy canvas” painting at Lincoln Financial Field.
Now, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback is making an art project of his own.
Winston’s “easy canvass” painting is part of a larger project to help the city of Tampa deal with its crumbling infrastructure, a $100 million-plus project that will be done by a local nonprofit.
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said it is a great project and that the mural was the perfect fit for the city.
“We have a lot of issues right now,” Buckhorn told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.
“We have infrastructure problems.
And a lot people don’t know about that.
And so, we thought, well, why not use art as a tool to bring those issues to light?”
It’s very powerful.
And I think he is one of those people who knows how to use art to do something that he feels strongly about.
“The painting is titled “Welcome to the Party,” and it will be on display in a new art gallery at the Lincoln Financial Stadium.”
The project is the latest example of the artist’s work, which he describes as “a way to say, hey, I’m not just going to do this painting and then leave.””
This is not going to distract you from the important things.”

Winston also has done murals at the University of South Florida and at an NBA game.
The Buccaneers, who play their home opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, have a $10 million project in the works that includes the renovation of the home and the addition of a parking garage.
It includes $3.2 million for a new practice facility and a $300,000 to $500,000 renovation of their practice field.
Winfield, who was born in Miami and has lived in Tampa since being drafted by the Bucs in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft, has been in the spotlight during his time in the NFL.
He has been criticized for his partying, his behavior on the field, and his personal life.
He was arrested in March after a party was held at his home, and he was suspended for the next four games for failing to report to a team meeting and for missing a mandatory NFL meeting.
Winstead’s team has not commented on the mural project, but the Buccaneers have a tradition of using its own murals.
In 2012, a large wall mural in the locker room of the Tampa Buccaneers was the first in the league to feature Winston.
